The FIDM Museum’s costume exhibition grows every year to showcase the very best of film design. In this 28th year, we explored the craft of costume design and celebrated the talented artisans who bring movie characters to life. Fan favorites were displayed alongside Academy Award® nominees from a variety of genres, as well as the return of Ruth Carter’s groundbreaking and Oscar-winning Black Panther costumes.
This highly anticipated annual exhibition celebrated outstanding achievement in costume design from 2018 films. Fan favorites along with Academy Award® nominees from a variety of genres were on display. Highlights included Ruth Carter’s groundbreaking and Oscar-winning Black Panther costumes, Mary Poppins Returns by Sandy Powell, Crazy Rich Asians by Mary Vogt, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald by Colleen Atwood.
The FIDM Museum & Galleries celebrated the imagination, tenacity, and achievement of Motion Picture Costume Designers and their teams in the 26th year of our annual exhibition. The costumes from 2017’s most popular films were on display, including all five Academy Award® nominees for Best Costume Design and the winner, Mark Bridges for Phantom Thread. The exhibition also featured ensembles from Wonder Woman (Lindy Hemming), Dunkirk (Jeffrey Kurland), Thor: Ragnarock (Mayes C. Rubeo), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Michael Kaplan) and many more visually stunning films.
FIDM Museum’s annual exhibition has become a tradition for LA locals and movie lovers alike. In 2017, the FIDM Museum celebrated the exhibition’s 25th year of showcasing excellence in film costume design. We invited visitors to explore the history of this exhibition at the FIDM Museum, and to take a closer look at favorite costumes from 2016 movies.
FIDM Museum’s annual exhibition has become a tradition for LA locals and movie lovers alike. This year, 23 films from a variety of genres represented outstanding achievement in costume design. Fan favorites such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Michael Kaplan), Cinderella (Sandy Powell), and Crimson Peak (Kate Hawley) were displayed, along with all five Academy Award nominated films – including the winning designs from Mad Max: Fury Road (Jenny Beavan). The 2014 Academy Award winning costumes from The Grand Budapest Hotel (Milena Canonero) were also part of this popular exhibition.
FIDM Museum & Galleries’ popular annual exhibition shined the spotlight on costumes that helped bring memorable film characters to life. This year’s exhibition featured over 100 costumes representing 20 of 2014’s most notable films in a variety of genres. Viewers had the opportunity to see the exquisite designs and craftsmanship produced by many top costume designers.
Costumes from 2014’s Academy Award® winning The Great Gatsby, (Catherine Martin), were spotlighted. Other films included Belle (Anushia Nieradzik), Big Eyes (Colleen Atwood), Selma (Ruth E. Carter), and Jersey Boys (Deborah Hopper).
Costumes from selected films of 2013 were displayed in this annual exhibition of film costume design. The 2013 Academy Award® winner for Best Costume Design, Anna Karenina, designed by Jacqueline Durran, was highlighted in the exhibition.

Originated by FIDM Museum Director Maggy Murray, the inaugural FIDM Museum Exhibition of Motion Picture Costume Design was a resounding success. This first exhibition featured costumes from 1964 to 1992, including My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Great Gatsby, All That Jazz, Dangerous Liaisons and Bugsy. Based on this success, this exhibit has become a highly anticipated annual tradition.
